2 ~ The Boer War Monument
Was erected in memory of local resident Frank Morrisby who died after being kicked by a horse only days after peace had been declared. He served in South Africa, having been one of the first Tasmanians to enlist at the outbreak of the war. The memorial was designed by Samual Watson, a noted Hobart stonemason and the iron column was cast by Richard Brown of Bellerive. Originally topped by a gas lamp and surrounded by a fence, the monument was unveiled in 1903 by Frank's former commanding officer, Major Cyril Cameron.
